Perry Doddridge and the Founding of the First Bank
in Corpus Christi

A merchant, banker, and civic leader, Perry Doddridge opened a merchandise business upon moving to Corpus Christi in 1871. That year he, along with Allen Davis, set up the first bank in Corpus Christi. Unfortunately, the bank closed in 1891 as a direct result of the financial collapse and discontinued efforts of Elihu H. Ropes' to build a deepwater port and railroad between Texas and Central America. Doddridge's civic works in Corpus Christi included acquiring land for public schools, serving as school board president, and supporting the ship channel and railway projects. He was elected mayor in 1874 and served on the county commissioner's court.
