Jim Rhodes and the Opening of the Corpus Christi
Army Depot

In 1959, the Corpus Christi-based Navy Overhaul and Repair facility closed, laying off 3,000 workers. Meanwhile the Army was looking for a sight to open a new repair facility, and Jim Rhodes, a former assistant maintenance manager, was part of the Army's decision-making team. He pushed for Corpus Christi to be selected because of the machinery and trained personnel that were already in place. In 1961, the Corpus Christi Army Depot opened and remains the largest single employer in the area and one of the City's main lifelines.
