Luther Jones, Corpus Christi's First "Mayor Emeritus"

Luther Jones's 27-year army career saw him reach Colonel, where he was inducted during WWII and served in Vietnam and the Pentagon before becoming Commander of Corpus' Army Depot. Affectionately nicknamed “Mr. Corpus Christi,” upon retiring, Jones ran for mayor in 1975 and lost, winning in 1979 and serving the next 3 terms. At the forefront of the "Homeport" initiative that secured Naval Station Ingleside, Jones' tenure also saw in the Texas State Aquarium, the change from at-large to a hybrid city council (introducing single-member districts), as well as a new city hall and central library. Retiring in 1987, he was named Corpus' first "Mayor Emeritus" by City Council. In the spring of 1990, Luther Jones Elementary was dedicated in his honor.
